It is a few metres lower than the dome and a great deal easier: the stair is wider, there are landings to stop and breathe on, and it is open to the air rather than buried in a wall.
The relief panels around the base are copies; the originals, by Andrea Pisano and Luca della Robbia, are in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
The marble is the same three-colour scheme as the cathedral, and from close up you can see how much of the design is geometry rather than ornament.
⭐ This is the view with the dome in it. If you only climb one thing and you want the photograph everybody recognises, climb this one.
