How to use this

Twenty-four places, each with its own page: what it is, what is actually inside, whether it is free or ticketed, which day it shuts, and the mistake people make there.

⭐ Roughly a third of them cost nothing to enter. In this city the free ones are frequently the ones with no queue, which is not the usual arrangement in a major tourist centre.

⚠️ Almost all the big museums close on Monday. A Monday in Florence goes to the churches, the streets, the markets and the hills — all of which are open.

The ones people underrate

San Marco, where Fra Angelico painted a fresco into every monk's cell, is the most under-visited great sight in the city. The Bargello is the best sculpture museum in Italy and a fraction as busy as the Accademia. Orsanmichele is free, on the direct line between the Duomo and the Signoria, and most people walk straight past it.

⭐ San Miniato al Monte is older, emptier and better than the viewpoint below it, and it costs nothing.
