Fra Angelico lived here and frescoed the cells one by one, as private objects of contemplation rather than public art. You walk a corridor and look into forty small rooms, each with a painting in it. The Annunciation at the top of the stairs is the famous one.
Savonarola was prior here, and his cell is preserved with his few possessions.
It is a fifteen-minute walk from the Duomo, which is why it is quiet, and it is one of the places people say afterwards they wish they had allowed longer for.
