The inside is the clearest thing Brunelleschi ever built: a colonnade of identical grey columns marching down both sides and round the back, so the space reads as one continuous shape. He designed it at the end of his life and it was finished after his death.
The facade is blank plaster — no marble, no decoration at all — which makes the interior more surprising than it would otherwise be.
The square outside has a market in the mornings and fills with people in the evenings, and is where a good deal of Florence actually spends its time.
