Each of Florence's major guilds was made responsible for one exterior niche, and they competed. The result is a ring of early Renaissance sculpture at street level — Donatello, Ghiberti, Verrocchio, Nanni di Banco — on an ordinary shopping street.
⚠️ The statues outside are copies. The originals are in the museum on the upper floors of the same building.
Inside is Orcagna's extraordinary carved tabernacle, and the two upper halls still show the chutes and openings from when the building stored the city's grain.
⭐ Free, on the direct line between the Duomo and the Signoria, and most people walk past without looking up.
